Jaime Hustace was raised in Smith Valley, Nevada where she grew up raising and showing horses, sheep, and cattle. The FFA and 4-H organizations taught her leadership, perseverance, business skills, and compassion for the animals and their owners. Growing up in this small town provided a sturdy foundation for pursuing her educational goals. Obtaining her bachelor’s degree at the University of Nevada, Reno was the first step toward getting her doctorate in veterinary medicine. She was then accepted to veterinary school at Oregon State University which allowed for a hands-on education with a small class size and wonderful staff at OSU as well as Washington State University. Following graduation, Jaime headed to Colorado for a well-rounded, unprecedented internship at Littleton Equine Medical Center.
Oregon State offered her a position as an internal medicine resident. This was a three year program that included becoming a specialist in large animal internal medicine and teaching veterinary students. Following her residency, she returned home to Smith Valley, Nevada where she started Sierra Nevada Large Animal Hospital with the help of Nona Bales. With her specialty in Large Animal internal medicine, she is doing consulting work for colleagues in Nevada and California concerning challenging cases.
Jaime grew up showing horses in the cutting pen, over jumps, and on the dressage court. She is enjoying getting back on her horses with a three day event prospect as well as a perspective rope horse. She also enjoys camping and getting to the mountains with her horses, running, working her dog, Jess, and spending time with her husband, Erik, in Montana.
Kendall had the amazing opportunity to study veterinary medicine and surgery at the University of Glasgow in Scotland, United Kingdom. Her main interests and emphasis during vet school included both equine and bovine medicine. Throughout veterinary school, Kendall went on many externships with equine and bovine practitioners to gain knowledge and experience in the field she wanted to enter into upon graduation. Kendall is artificial insemination certified in cattle and has a huge interest in both cattle and horse reproductive work. When she had any free time from school, Kendall enjoyed playing polo for the University and travelling to new places throughout Europe.
Before veterinary school Kendall earned her Bachelors of Animal Science at California State University, Chico. During her studies at Chico, she took many opportunities to be actively involved with the University Farm, by taking milking shifts at the organic dairy and working at the sheep and goat unit.
Kendall was raised in Vacaville California, which is where she first starting riding horses and found her passion for large animal medicine. Currently in Kendall’s free time she enjoys spending time with her husband Dave, waterskiing, running and spending time outdoors . She is very excited to be joining the Sierra Nevada Large Animal Hospital team and is looking forward to meeting all of our clients.
Nona Bales and her husband Richard moved to Smith Valley in 1990 after his retirement from the Bishop Police Department. She is a lifelong horsewoman, with grandparents on both sides making their living as ranchers, farmers and horse trainers. One of her most memorable teachers was Arnold “Chief” Rojas, a legendary horseman and one of the original advocates of equine dentistry. She was honored to spend many hours assisting him while learning about bits, bitting and the vaquero way.
As a young girl Nona helped her grandmother with riding lessons and in retraining spoiled ponies as well as starting young horses and mules. She’s been teaching and training ever since with an emphasis on carriage driving for the last several years. Nona has worked with various equine veterinarians over the years and managed a busy equine practice for nearly twelve years before she and Dr. Jaime Hustace started Sierra Nevada Large Animal Hospital, LLC in 2009.
